Why Linux ----

Versatile / Easy / Powerful / Free Software

You can do what you want when you want--unlike the Microsoft slogan of the late 90s "Where do you want to go today", which I believe it should have been "Will my computer turn on today". Well enough of the Microsoft bashing. They do make good products. Like the mouse for instance, they should stick with that.

Linux has a lot of variants out there. Here is a quick list of some of the top version of Linux:

  • Ubuntu Linux
  • Gentoo Linux
  • Fedora Core
  • SUSE Linux
  • Debian GNU/Linux

  • You are probably wondering why there are so many. Think of Linux like you would shoes.

All shoes are basically the same:

  • Some are made of cloth and rubber
  • They all go on your feet

  • The only thing that differs from shoe to shoe is how it is packaged for you.We all know Nike, Adidas, Reebok, K-Swiss, and so on....

Just like Linux you have the base system, which is the same in all versions. What makes a difference is the bundle of applications that come with each version.

Take Fedora Core vs. SUSE Linux. They system is the same, but in SUSE when it starts up and you go to login you will use the KDE window manager. With Fedora you will login and use the Gnome Desktop environment with Metacity as your window manager. Basically the applications are what makes a difference.

The neat thing about all these different flavors of Linux is that all the applications will work with all versions/flavors of Linux. Just take the above example and on Fedora you can install KDE and use that as your window manager, or on SUSE you can install Gnome Desktop environment and use that on SUSE.

That is why Linux is so versatile and powerful
